Though it may seem difficult to make coat racks it is actually very easy. Wood is the main thing that you will need. Along with some screws, a large sized dowel, some sandpaper or a sander, a little bit of stain or paint. Size and style should be decided upon before you begin. A child size coat rack will be used to show how easy it is. Wood either 2x4 or 2x6 that is three to four feet long is a must. It works well for making coat racks. The wood will have to be sanded. Sand along the length, the corners and ends of this piece, that will form the center bar. Take two smaller pieces of wood that are the same length and cut one in half. These are going to be the base found on many coat racks. Make sure the pieces are big enough to support the coat rack. Form an X shape by putting the two cut pieces together at a ninety degree angel to the uncut piece with the screws.
Now you are ready to screw the centerpiece onto the base. The basic design for this type of coat rack is now formed. Using either large C hooks or a dowel, place them where the center post is going to go. This part of the process may require the drilling of holes. Depending on what you are doing you may paint it before you assemble it or once it is assembled. Lots of people wait to paint until they have put the rack together. It should be allowed to completely dry before touching it again. Children should be supervised by an adult at all times.
