As a home owner you want your house to have a nice cozy lived in feel that your friends and family will enjoy each time they enter, but how do you keep it ordered and uncluttered? There are a few different pieces of furniture that can help you keep your belongings tidy and still give your interior space a creative edge. You could use cupboards or large display cabinets in the main rooms to store your things, though shelves are a better way to make use of the vertical space that few people consider. These days a hot item are ladder shelves, they come in a variety of design and look fantastic in almost any room.
So why are ladder shelves so popular with house owners all of a sudden? One reason might be to do with the affects of the recent economic downturn; people are keeping a close hold on what money they have. Instead of spending your hard earned salaries on a brand new set of shelves the other option would be to make your own. You might be thinking that it is a huge job that may take over a week to complete, but you'd be wrong, making a set of ladder shelves is very simple and will cost you a fraction of the price of buying them new.

Step by step to constructing your own ladder shelves
When you learn how easy it is to construct a simple set of ladder shelves, you'll wonder why you hadn't done it sooner. If you have a quick look around the house you probably have all the materials that you need, the most important part is having an 'A-Ladder' made from wood, the rest of the supplies can easily be bought at any hardware store or home depot.
(1) The first step is to buy or find your self a second hand 'A-Ladder', these are old wooden step ladders with 5 - 6 rungs, if you don't have one in your garage or back garden you may be able to find a cheap alternative at a flea market or back yard sale. Don't pay more than for a used A-Ladder and if you have to go to your local home depot they are available for bout each.
(2) The second step in building your ladder shelves is to take a few measurements, you will need to know the distance between each rung level, this is so that you can cut out your shelves to the right size. After you have the correct measurements, you will need to add about 16 to 17 inches to the length values, each platform needs to be a little longer than the distance between each rung. Don't forget to add up all the lengths and buy enough wood board for all of the shelves, you might be able to get wood for free at your local landfill site.
(3) You now have the main frame, which is the ladder and the shelves prepared. The next step is to choose a color to paint the ladder shelves; a lot of people opt for a neutral matte white or rustic earthy brown. Don't use oil-based paint; this will make your final product look a little unattractive.
(4) The last step is to put the ladder shelves onto the A-ladder frame. If you're worried about the shelves falling over under the weight of your belongings you can use glue to attach the platforms to each rung. Some people like to use a few screws just to make sure it is stable; your ladder shelves are now ready for decorating.
